William Shakespeare once said, “The eyes are the window to your soul.” But this saying actually originates from the Bible! In Matthew 6:22-23, Jesus says “22 The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Now let’s look at one of the 10 ten commandments, namely #7: “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14.
Hmm….what does that mean?
OK, here is what I found as I was led by the Holy Spirit. He had me take certain points from different interpretations to make a complete understanding of the true meaning of this commandment.
First, we will look at the definition of the word ‘adultery’. According to Merriam-webster, adultery means voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than that person’s spouse or partner.
Now, let’s look at what the Bible says…..in the Wiersbe Bible Exposition Commentary, it says that back in the day, adultery was so serious that it was considered a capital crime. They reference 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 NLT written by Paul, which reads: “3 God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. 4 Then each of you will control his own body and life in holiness and honor-5 not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and His ways.”
Now, what does Jesus say in the Bible? Let’s look at John 8:1-11NLT: “1 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning He was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and He sat down and taught them. 3 As He was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap Him into saying something they could use against Him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with His finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so He stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then He stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
So, Jesus forgave her because forgiveness starts in the eye of the beholder who is Jesus! He sees everything! And you can be forgiven, too!!! But remember, Jesus said SIN NO MORE! There is the key to the forgiveness. If you continue sinning and going against the Father, you cannot expect Him to forgive you! He looks at your heart and He knows if you are just saying it or if you truly mean it.
