In Genesis 2:18 NLT it reads: Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.
Most women find that term ‘helper’ a little degrading because in this day and age, women can do just as much as men and sometimes even more!
As I researched, I went to the ‘The Bible Exposition Commentary by Warren W. Wiersbe to get a different perspective. Here’s what it said: The woman was by no means a “lesser creature.” The same God who made Adam also made Eve and created her in His own image. Both Adam and Eve exercised dominion over Creation (v. 29). Adam was made from the dust, but Eve was made from Adam’s side, bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh (v. 2;23). The plain fact is that Adam needed Eve. Not a single animal God had created could do for Adam what Eve could do. She was a helper suitable for him. When God paraded the animals before Adam for him to name them, they doubtless came before him in pairs, each with its own mate; and perhaps Adam wondered, “Why don’t I have a mate?” Though Eve was made to be a “suitable helper” for Adam, she wasn’t made to be his slave. The noted Bible commentator Matthew Henry wrote: “She was not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.”
Wow! Stop and re-read this commentary! When you re-read these words, they make perfect sense! Don’t you agree? Well, they did to me!!!!!!!!
The commentary also noted that Paul wrote that “the woman is the glory of man” (1 Cor. 11:7, NIV); for if man is the head (1 Cor. 111-16; Eph. 5:22-33), then woman is the crown that honors the head.
THINK ABOUT THAT!!!!
So, something else came up in my research. Do you know who the Bible refers to more often than anyone else as the “helper”?
The answer is God Himself. You always read about God helping His people, coming to their rescue, providing manna and protecting them. So, in essence, to be a “helper” is to be like God! Isn’t that a kick in the pants!
It says in Psalm 54:4 NLT, where David states: “But God is my helper. He keeps me alive!
Again in John 14:16 NASB2020, Jesus says: I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever;
The key word here is “another” helper. So, Jesus is referring to Himself as a Helper and then to the Holy Spirit as a Helper. Therefore, biblically speaking, a “Helper” is godly!
Jesus tells us again in the New Testament in John 14:26 NKJV, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you.”
One of the most famous verses in the Bible is found in Hebrews 13:6 NLT and it reads, So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”
Okay, I don’t know about you, but as for me, I have no problem with being my husband’s helper because I know that is God’s will for me as a wife! I sincerely hope this has made you see how God sees you, not as a doormat, but as a beautiful crown for your husband’s head! What an honor to glorify God as a helper to your husband!
